Seventh: having an owner [who builds] a large hut for oneself. Because the monk Channa had many acquaintances who supplied what was needed to help build the dwelling, he thereupon felled a large tree and arbitrarily exceeded the measure. In the sense of a forest, a large tree is a sacred tree endowed with majesty and spirits, known to many people, where people can also take rest. Having lost the forest trees, people no longer recognise [the place], and they also lose the source of shade. They jointly complained and grumbled. Because of this, kings, nāgas, snakes, and the like can cause troubles and harm, breaking the brahmacarya and bringing ruin to the Three Jewels. Accommodating the four postures of deportment—calling it 'large' is merely a general way of speaking about a dwelling; it does not necessarily have to be large. If the saṃgha does not perform a karman for him and does not inspect [the site], the saṃgha commits a duṣkṛta. Because of this, [the Buddha] formulated the precept. The only difference is that there is an owner; everything else is entirely as explained above under the rule without an owner.
