Fifty-seven: Upananda's novice, named Magha, committed grave sexual misconduct and developed an evil view, saying that practicing sensual desire cannot obstruct the path. The assembly gathered and admonished him three times, but he did not renounce his evil view; thereupon, with a jñapti-caturtha-karman, they performed permanent expulsion (nāśana) upon him and dispatched him to leave. This expulsion was not accepted [by him], and the ṣaḍvargika monks, knowing this, harbored him. This would foster evil and harbor malice so that it could not be restrained; therefore it is not permitted to harbor him, speak with him, share activities with him, or lodge with him in the same room. The meaning of speaking with him, sharing activities, and lodging in the same room is the same as above. In each instance, it is an offense of pāyattika as above. If he is not a permanently expelled novice, upon regaining right view, he is permitted to repent. If a permanently expelled novice bitterly reforms and repents on his own, seeking to live dependent on the assembly, if it is sincere and the assembly pities him, he is permitted to live dependent on the assembly according to the status of a layperson. For the rest of his life he may not receive ordination. He may share the assembly's food, but is not given a share of robes. If a donor gives to him, he may accept it. His master may not hold the voting-tally (śalākā) on his behalf.
