Sixty: Bathing at intervals of less than half a month is an offense of pāyattika. King Bimbisāra had three canals of water and shared the upper canal with the Saṃgha. The monks bathed frequently, interfering with and hindering the king's use; therefore the precept was instituted, setting the limit at half a month. After the limit was set, during hot weather they did not bathe and fell ill; so an exception was opened for hot weather, allowing them to bathe at will: the remaining one and a half months of spring and the first month of summer. Furthermore, when ill and defiled, when dusty during wind, when robes are soaked during rain, or when traveling and working cause dirt and sweat, bathing is permitted and there is no offense. When bathing, one should wear clothing, kneel with the right knee on the ground, join palms, and say to one monk: 'Venerable, please remember: for such-and-such reasons I need to bathe.' If one's teacher is present, one should report to the teacher in all cases; if there is no teacher, one should report to a senior monk; if there is no senior monk, one should inform a junior monk, only without kneeling on the ground. Everything that ought to be done is like this. If one has fifty vassa, leaving the boundary and matters of great importance should be reported and informed; matters of little importance need not be reported or informed. Therefore it is said.
