Sixty-one: Intentionally depriving an animal of life. Above, using water with insects to water grass and earth, and using water with insects for oneself: although there was truly no compassion, the mind did not intend harm. Here, Kālodayin, out of arrogance and to show off his skill, intentionally deprived a bird of life. Whether by oneself, by instructing another, or by sending a messenger, these are the three kinds of killing: when that life is cut off, the monk commits a pāyattika. Moreover, there are three kinds of killing: either by body, or by non-body. By these three matters, intentionally harming a living being: if it dies, it is a pāyattika; if it does not die, it is a duṣkṛta. Even down to the initial conception of a body faculty and life faculty in the womb, if through the causes and conditions of bodily, verbal, and mental karma one uses expedient means wishing to kill: if it dies, it is a pāyattika; if it does not die, it is a duṣkṛta.
