Eleventh: other monks agreeing and speaking divergent words. After Devadatta split the saṃgha, other good monks, who were previously close and of one mind with Kokālika and the others, pitied and admonished them in private and secluded places; even if there were many, they were all good monks. Next, where it states 'these monks of the same mind', it refers to those four persons who were of the same mind as Devadatta. At first, admonishing by one, two, or three people incurs a light sthūlāccaya; a formal admonition through karman within the saṃgha incurs a grave sthūlāccaya. The four persons who assisted in splitting the saṃgha incurring a saṃghāvaśeṣa applies after the precept was established. If, despite the saṃgha's admonitions, they do not desist and assist in accomplishing the schism of the saṃgha, they commit a light sthūlāccaya bordering on the act of immediate retribution of the four matters, which can be repented. The remaining five hundred monks commit a grave sthūlāccaya bordering on saṃghāvaśeṣa. Regarding the 'nine pure monks': Devadatta considered himself a Buddha and did not count among the eight; therefore, they should abandon divergent words that agree with schism in the saṃgha. When one's mind agrees with Devadatta, it diverges from the good assembly; one should swiftly abandon speech that diverges from the assembly. Devadatta acted as the Buddha, and the four persons acted as the assembly: with both Buddha and assembly together, a transformation was formed; because they could carry the Dharma, there was the great act of immediate retribution of creating a transformation without a leader. Those who followed them committed a grave sthūlāccaya. These monks' speech and so forth all constitute grave sthūlāccayas, which occurred before the karman.
