Twelfth: Corrupting other families. Wherever the ṣaḍvargika monks, such as Aśvaka and Punarvasuka, traveled, their sitting, rising, and speech all transgressed deportment. They were fully endowed with sthūlāccaya and the various evils of the four classes [of offenses]. People who were faithful had all their good minds ruined, held the Buddha-Dharma in contempt, and no longer respected the Saṃgha. When the Venerable Ānanda entered the village to beg for food, he was greatly slighted and insulted, and returned with an empty bowl. Consequently, seeing this, the assembly was gathered and they were expelled in accordance with the Dharma. Committing various non-Dharmic acts is called 'evil conduct'. Destroying people's pure minds is called 'corrupting other families'. 'Following love, following anger, following fear, following delusion'—these are the words of resentment spoken by those expelled. At that time, when the ṣaḍvargika monks, such as Aśvaka, heard that the great assembly was coming and knew that it wished to expel them, some fled like the wind and vanished; some met the assembly and admitted their guilt; and some stubbornly remained in their original place, were expelled, and grew resentful. They said that committing evils was no different, so leaving or staying ought to be the same, yet now it was not the same, which must have stemmed from favoritism and animosity, or looking down on them while fearing others, or being foolish, dark, and unperceiving, having an unequal frame of mind and conducting matters unfairly. Harboring such resentment, they refused to accept admonition. Before admonition, they incur the offense of the respective class according to what they transgressed. At first, when admonished individually by one, two, or three persons, it is a light sthūlāccaya. In the assembly, the first and second admonitions incur two grave sthūlāccayas. If they do not stop upon the third admonition, they commit a saṃghāvaśeṣa.
