First: When the kathina robe has been completed, an extra robe may be kept for ten days. This refers to what is obtained upon completing the rains retreat and during the kathina robe [privilege]. An urgent gift of ten days is forfeited on the day it is finished. Robes kept from one to ten days that are already forfeited incur no offense; it is only because successive days continue uninterrupted that obtaining one on the tenth day entails an offense. Washing [the robe] beyond ten days is not an offense, because returning it restores its proper status. Generally, there are four propositions: Either the three robes and non-three robes that are utilized are all complete and not yet relinquished. The kathina robe has two types: complete in itself, or lacking one robe, which is completed using the kathina robe to fulfill the two precepts; or by relinquishing the kathina robe while the three robes are incomplete—such relinquishing is of two types: either relinquishing due to the eight adversities, or relinquishing when the days are fulfilled. Third: either the three robes are complete and the kathina robe is also relinquished; the kathina robe should be termed a single share of benefit, and the remaining kathina robe benefits are relinquished when the days are fulfilled. If one lacks two or has no three robes, one does not obtain the kathina robe. Fourth: or the three robes are incomplete and the kathina robe is also not relinquished; this refers to having already obtained some, but missing a small portion not yet begged, which when completed makes a robe—this is termed 'incomplete'. Within the kathina privilege, one obtains seven benefits and relinquishes seven precepts without offense. When the rains retreat ends without a kathina robe, one may not sleep apart from the three robes; yet within one month, one also obtains five benefits: namely, repeatedly eating, entering the village before noon, entering the village after noon without informing others, keeping extra wealth, eating in a separate assembly, and eating without prior appointment—the only difference being that one cannot receive the robes given during the kathina privilege or sleep apart from the robes. Therefore, monks who enter the retreat later do not obtain these days. The rule having been set, when the summer division has passed and one enters the winter division, because during the summer division there is much wandering to pay homage to stupas, teachers, and monks, donors are joyful; therefore, the Buddha permitted pure vikalpanā of items in advance, and when the initial kathina robe is completed, no further vikalpanā is required.
