Eighteenth: Personally taking gold or silver, or instructing another to take it. Mentioning silver includes the seven treasures, coins, and all precious items. Such things are the treasures of material goods; none among conscious beings fails to cherish them. Losing one's life and straying from the Way always stems from them. Yet the followers of the ṣaḍvargika monks took gold and silver with their own hands. Elders and householders all rebuked them together: "Why do the Śākyan śramaṇas not renounce precious curiosities, yet accept and hold them? Wearing the four robes, how can they grasp gold? They are no different from nobles." On this account, the precept was formulated: one must not grasp treasures. Personally grasping or instructing another monk to grasp both constitute a niḥsargika-pāyattika. Śrāmaṇeras may grasp them, but may not store them. For the offense of grasping treasures, one must repent in the assembly.
