Nineteenth: Buying various goods with silver. The expression "various goods" means all necessary articles. A great monk uses a niḥsargika-pāyattika [matter], buying whatever he pleases with gold and silver; whether lawful or unlawful, everything is provided. On this account, the precept was formulated, completely disallowing it. In general, whatever is bought with niḥsargika-pāyattika goods is entirely niḥsargika-pāyattika goods. Only for edible things, greedily obtaining them incurs a duṣkṛta, because there is nothing to forfeit. Because of shamelessness, its fault is exceedingly heavy; one must repent in the Saṃgha, and only then is it cleared.
