Twenty-seven: When the three months of the summer [retreat] are nearing their end, or before the eighth month is completed for the later retreat. Formerly, because the monk Vyāsa left his robes in the Andhavana forest and entered the city wearing only his upper and lower garments, upon his return he could not find them. On account of this, [the Buddha] praised keeping robe and bowl together. Later, in a certain country, monks of the later retreat had not yet completed the eighth month. According to the law of that country, on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the eighth month, they held eight sacrifices to spirits. Because of this danger, six days before the pavāraṇā, they were permitted to deposit their robes in a village and leave to avoid [the danger] without losing their āraṇyaka status. If the rule is observed in an āraṇyaka dwelling, it must depend on a village, because necessary supplies are easily obtained, and if there is danger, the robes [can be preserved]. In the south the terrain is flat, while in the north the terrain is rugged. Rugged terrain is difficult to travel, while flat terrain is easy to travel. Because it is easy to travel, it is limited to ten li from the village for depositing robes to be permitted. Because rugged terrain is difficult to travel, it is limited to five li for depositing robes to be permitted. If it is less than these distances in either place, depositing robes is not permitted, because being near the village there is rescue and assistance. From then on, for all monks within six days before the pavāraṇā, if there are relevant affairs, all may use this method without offense. At all other times, if the eight dangerous circumstances arise and one deposits robes and leaves, spending the night away results in the loss of the robes, but one does not commit a forfeiture and pāyattika; later, one simply receives them again.
