Twenty-six: Receiving urgent robe-offerings up to ten days before the pavāraṇā. There were two circumstances. First, there was a merchant who, for the sake of the rains retreat, offered goods to the saṃgha of a certain place; yet before the retreat was completed, they divided the goods and left. The merchant later returned and was exceedingly surprised and resentful. Second, King Prasenajit had a great general who received orders to go on a campaign; it was an urgent matter suitable for offering. Based on these two circumstances, there were permissions and prohibitions, which combined to form the precept. There are eight kinds of people who make urgent offerings: a king, a queen, a crown prince, a chief minister, a great general, a sick person, a woman about to be married off, or someone fearing enemies or robbers. If it is within ten days before the pavāraṇā, and these eight kinds of people make robe-offerings on account of an urgent matter, one may accept them if they distribute them with their own hands. Since once the ten days are completed, one enters the kathina robe [period], it is included within the proper time. If it is a general offering not made to individuals, the assembly receives it together, and it is distributed once the pavāraṇā is completed. Furthermore, before the ten days, none of the offered goods are to be distributed at all, lest it cause disorder or out of fear that the assembly might disperse. Prior to the ten days, the donors distribute the offerings themselves; after receiving them, one assigns them (vikalpanā). Furthermore, if one receives urgent robe-offerings and there is no kathina robe, one may keep them for one month; having kept them for one month, one should assign (vikalpanā) and forfeit them. If there is no urgent forfeiture, after one month one also gets ten days. If there are urgent offerings and the kathina robe is completed, extra robes may not be kept for ten days, because one already received ten days previously. If one received urgent robe-offerings nine days before, afterward one gets one day; similarly, if eight days before, one can get two days—calculating the later based on the earlier. If there were no urgent robe-offerings previously, afterward one is granted ten days.
