Fourteenth: Spreading the saṃgha's beds and bedding and not instructing another to put them away—Formerly, at one time the assembly spread out beds and spread out seats, and having done so, did not put them away, going out to attend an invitation. Later, heavy rain soaked and soiled them all. The World-Honoured One, coming behind, unlocked the room and collected and stored them. Because of this, the precept was established, universally regulating both public and private [items]. Whether the items used belong to the assembly or are private, if having spread them out one does not put them away, for each drop [of rain] it is a pāyattika. There are five kinds of beds; only the hasthikā [can be used], and the other four may not be shared out. A day is divided into five periods: daylight, before noon, noon, afternoon, and sunset. If spread at daylight and not put away, reaching before noon it is a pāyattika; the remaining passage of time is also like this. Having spread them and not put them away, going out past the gate forty-nine paces is a pāyattika. Going slightly outside the wall, reaching daylight it is a duṣkṛta. Going wandering through various rooms without entrusting them to someone is also a duṣkṛta. If two people spread them together, the one who leaves later should put them away. If two people see them together, one should put away the bed and one should put away the mattress. If when first going out or coming in, it happens to rain, or if the eight perils arise, or if the door-hook is lost, there is no offense. On the saṃgha's beds and bedding, one may not eat on top of them; bedding may not be soiled by urine or feces. When listening to the Dharma, there is no offense. Not putting away private belongings is a duṣkṛta.
