Sixteenth: In a monk's dwelling, with anger, malice, and displeasure, personally dragging a monk out or having someone drag him out—Dwellings and bedding are property of the cāturdiśa-saṃgha. The summer retreat is three months; the winter is four months; during spring and autumn there is no allotment, and rooms should be changed every day, according to what the senior monk desires, in order to settle guest monks and make minds free from attachment. A novice monk receives a share following his master; the assembly does not give rooms by allocation, only bedding is shared equally among all, giving first to senior monks, and when exhausted, it stops. In the early days when the rule for dividing rooms and changing dwellings had not yet been established, many monks assembled in Śrāvastī. There was a dwelling where the rooms had not been repaired; the assembly divided them together, each undertaking their own repairs. The ṣaḍvargika monks were indolent and did not join in repairing them; seeing that others had finished repairs, they thereupon seized them according to seniority, saying: 'I am senior, you are junior; the rule is that you must yield to me.' Dragging and pulling, they forced them to leave. Dragging out oneself or instructing another to drag out: if capable of doing so, both are pāyattikas; if incapable, both are duṣkṛtas. Because of this cause: if there is no other reason, and one tells a junior monk that it is inconvenient and he should leave, if there are no external, internal, or urgent special reasons, and one drags him out, it is a pāyattika.
