[Rule] Twenty-four: Arranging to travel along a road together with a nun, even to a single village, is a pāyattika, except on special occasions. "Special occasions" means if there is a large caravan, or if there is apprehension and danger. The ṣaḍvargika monks and the nuns who supported Devadatta made an agreement to travel the road together, doing improper things, flirting, and engaging in various evil deeds, either in front or behind. Several householders heard of it and criticized them. For this reason, it was prohibited to travel together with nuns. Later, at one time, the monks wished to go from Kosala to Śrāvastī; arriving at a dangerous road, they needed to wait for a large caravan. When the caravan arrived and was about to go, the assembly of nuns followed them; because the precept had been formulated, the monks did not permit it. The monks arrived safely at their dwelling; the assembly of nuns fell behind and all encountered wicked bandits, completely losing their robes and belongings, being stripped naked and ruined. For this reason, an exception was again opened: except when there are special occasions. "Special occasions" means traveling with a large caravan, or when the road has danger from bandits. As for apprehension, there are two kinds: either apprehension of losing robes, or apprehension of losing food. According to the apprehended loss, the monk should carry the burden for her and transport it to a safe place, where it should be returned to her, telling her to proceed at will, and they must not travel together. Traveling together to a village is a pāyattika; returning halfway is a duṣkṛta. If going toward open wilderness for five hundred bow-lengths, it is a pāyattika; returning halfway is a duṣkṛta. If traveling together with a king's consort, there is no offense.
