The precept on diverting Saṃgha property to oneself: If property intended for the Saṃgha is diverted to a stūpa; or from a stūpa diverted to the Saṃgha; from the [Saṃgha] of the four quarters diverted to the present [Saṃgha]; from the present [Saṃgha] diverted toward the [Saṃgha] of the four quarters; from monks to nuns; from nuns to monks; or diverted from this residence to a different residence, all are duṣkṛtas. What constitutes a niḥsargika [offense]? This is called forfeiting the property and forfeiting the offense. Furthermore, what is the procedure for forfeiture? In two cases—taking precious things and trading—it may be done before a layperson. The remaining twenty-eight precepts require forfeiture before the Saṃgha. Among the twenty-eight precepts, the single precept on begging a bowl requires forfeiture before the great assembly. The remaining twenty-seven precepts may be performed before one's own assembly or a different assembly; if done before a single person, all are valid, but they must not be forfeited before a separate faction. Among these twenty-seven precepts, as for the one precept on mats containing wild silk, the forfeiture is done by using an axe to chop it finely, making mud to plaster walls and other uses. In the case of the remaining twenty-six precepts, forfeiture does not destroy their substance. Among these twenty-six precepts, in the precept on keeping medicine beyond seven days, after being forfeited, it may only be used for rubbing feet, lighting lamps, and smearing doors and windows; it cannot be used for anything else. The remaining twenty-five precepts, once forfeited, may be used in accordance with the Dharma.
