The precept against successive meals: 'Successive' means that after having accepted another's invitation to a full meal, one subsequently accepts another, turning one's back on the prior acceptance; accepting the subsequent invitation is a falling offense. The school of the Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya] calls it the precept on eating in different places. If one accepts two invitations and forms the thought to give one to another, there is no offense. The Daśādhyāya[-vinaya] states: "Ānanda had previously accepted another person's invitation and later accepted King Prasenajit's invitation. Forgetting his prior acceptance, he did not reassign it to someone else. Just as he was about to eat, he remembered it. He could not swallow the food out of fear of violating the precept, yet he did not dare spit it out out of respect. The Buddha, knowing the remorse in Ānanda's mind, said to him: 'Mentally give it to another and then eat.' Upāli immediately asked: 'The Buddha permitted Ānanda to eat by mentally giving it to another; if other people mentally give it to another, may they eat or not?' The Buddha said: 'They may not, except for five kinds of people, as explained above.'"
