The precept on drinking alcohol: The Caturvargika-vinaya states: If one is ill and other medicines do not cure it, only when alcohol is the medicine is it permitted; or using it to smear on a sore is not an offense. The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya states: The monk Svāgata had a habit of drinking alcohol; because he did not get alcohol, his life was fading. The Buddha said: It is permitted to smell an alcohol vessel. If he still does not recover, it is permitted to mix alcohol with food; if eating it still does not cure him, the Buddha said: It is permitted to give him alcohol. Drinking alcohol has ten faults: first, loss of complexion; second, loss of physical strength; third, dimming of vision; fourth, easily displaying signs of anger; fifth, loss of wealth; sixth, giving rise to illness; seventh, increasing disputes; eighth, spreading a bad reputation; ninth, diminishing wisdom; tenth, falling into the evil destinies at death. The nature of the defilements is sharp; subduing them all day long is already difficult to control, so how much more when adding alcohol to aid the defilements, like adding firewood to a fire—how could it ever be extinguished?
