Sūtra: “Listening to me chant the Buddha’s precepts, the gate of ambrosia was thereupon opened.” / Commentary: Second is the fundamental body briefly introducing them. “Ambrosia” refers to nirvāṇa. In nirvāṇa, freedom from the aggregates that are the basis of death is called “ambrosia.” These wonderful precepts are the gate to nirvāṇa. Taking them as a basis, non-regret and the like arise, up to relying on concentration to generate genuine wisdom, thereby attaining nirvāṇa. As the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā, fascicle 8, states: “Why is this cessation also called ambrosia? Because it is free from the Māra of the aggregates. Because it is forever free from all the aggregates that are the basis of death, it is called ambrosia.” It also says: “Because through this restraint one can swiftly depart from the suffering of birth and death.” It also says: “What is bodily and vocal conformity in action? It is because it can conform to the attainment of nirvāṇa; that is, because it conforms to the attainment of nirvāṇa, it can lead to the noble path.” “Opened” means proclaimed and shown to others.
