First, elucidating the entity of dependent origination has five parts: 1. Question, 2. Brief answer, 3. Listing the names, 4. Explanation, and 5. General conclusion.
The fourth, explanation, has two parts: (1) jointly elucidating the prior limit and the intermediate limit; (2) elucidating the progression in transmigration and purification from the intermediate to the posterior limit.
The former text has two parts: question, and answer in five parts: (1) elucidating the sequence of transmigration based on womb-birth in five parts: explaining the meaning of continuation of birth based on the five factors of ignorance and so forth in five parts (elucidating ignorance, elucidating formations, elucidating consciousness, elucidating name-and-form, elucidating the six sense bases), explaining the meaning of name-and-form, explaining the mutual dependence of the faculties, general conclusion, and elucidating distinctions; (2) elucidating the sequence of transmigration based on egg-birth and moisture-birth; (3) elucidating the sequence of transmigration based on apparitional birth, in two parts: desire realm and form realm; (4) elucidating the sequence of transmigration based on the formless realm, in three parts: elucidating support, elucidating progression, and elucidating birth; (5) elucidating the sequence of transmigration based on the three karmas, in three parts: meritorious karma, non-meritorious karma, and immovable karma.
Second, elucidating the progression in transmigration and purification from the intermediate to the posterior limit has two parts: 1. General question, having two parts: inquiring into purification, and inquiring into rebirth through dependent origination operating in the posterior limit; 2. Answer, having two parts: answering concerning from the intermediate limit to the posterior limit, and answering concerning tending toward purification. The former text has three parts: general statement, listing the names, and explanation in two parts: based on internal maturation fruit, and based on external sovereign fruit. The former has two parts: statement, and elucidating the continuation of birth in subsequent existence based on the five factors of ignorance and so forth, in seven parts (elucidating the cause, elucidating ignorance, elucidating formations, elucidating consciousness, elucidating causal consciousness, elucidating consciousness-bodies, and elucidating the seeds of the four factors of name-and-form and so forth), and conclusion. The second, based on external sovereign fruit, has two parts: elucidating the continuation of birth in subsequent existence based on the seven factors of feeling, craving, and so forth in six parts (elucidating feeling and craving, elucidating grasping, elucidating existence, elucidating birth, elucidating aging-and-death, and elucidating the seeds in sequence of aging-and-death and so forth), and general conclusion. The second, elucidating tending toward purification, has two parts: elucidating with remainder (sopadhika), and elucidating without remainder (nirupadhika). The former text has three parts: first, elucidating the cause, having four parts: equipment (saṃbhāra), hearing, reflection, and cultivation; next, elucidating the fruit, having two parts: those in training (śaikṣa) and those beyond training (aśaikṣa); finally, elucidating the fruit's qualities, having four parts: (1) liberation by wisdom (prajñāvimukti), having two parts: elucidating the cause in two parts (severing ignorance and craving, and severing feeling) and elucidating the fruit; (2) liberation of mind (cetovimukti), having two parts: cause and fruit; (3) attaining the state of non-arising, having three parts: elucidating non-arising, elucidating the cause, and conclusion; (4) attaining visible-state nirvāṇa, having three parts: elucidating visible-state bliss, elucidating the presence or absence of feeling, and elucidating lifespan. The second, elucidating without remainder, has four parts: elucidating cessation of fruit, elucidating cessation of cause, elucidating the entity of without remainder, and praising qualities.
Fifth, elucidating the general conclusion has three parts, as should be known from the treatise.
