The second, explaining the state of seclusion, has four parts: 1. general question, 2. brief answer, 3. detailed explanation, 4. general conclusion. The detailed explanation has three parts: [1] The first, explaining the perfection of the dwelling place, has two parts: (1) general question, (2) detailed answer, which has two different approaches. The first approach explains the perfection of the dwelling place based on the araṇya and so forth, which has three parts: a. presentation, b. explanation, which has three parts: (a) explaining an empty, quiet room, (b) explaining at the foot of a tree, (c) explaining the araṇya; c. conclusion. The second approach explains the perfection of the dwelling place based on five dharmas such as elegance, which has two parts: a. general presentation, b. detailed explanation, which has five parts: (a) explaining the perfection of the dwelling place based on elegance, which has three parts: i. general presentation, ii. detailed explanation, which has eight parts as in the treatise, iii. conclusion; (b) explaining the perfection of the dwelling place based on inanimate objects and so forth, which has three parts: i. general presentation, ii. explanation, iii. conclusion; (c) explaining the perfection of the dwelling place based on absence of vicious beasts and so forth, which has three parts: i. general presentation, ii. explanation, iii. conclusion; (d) explaining the perfection of the dwelling place based on requisites, which has three parts: i. general presentation, ii. explanation, iii. conclusion; (e) explaining the perfection of the dwelling place based on good spiritual friends and so forth, which has three parts: i. general presentation, ii. explanation, which has two parts: (i) establishing the cause, (ii) demonstrating the result, iii. conclusion. [2] The second, explaining the perfection of deportment, has three parts: (1) general question, (2) detailed answer, (3) general conclusion; the detailed answer has two parts: a. citing the sutra and answering briefly, which has two parts: (a) explaining the deportment of walking, which has four parts as in the treatise, (b) explaining the deportment of bedding and seats, which has two parts: i. presentation, ii. explanation; b. explaining the intention of the sutra passages, which has three parts: (a) explaining the intention of sitting cross-legged, which has four parts: i. general question, ii. brief answer, iii. detailed explanation, which has five parts: establishing the superior qualities and merits of sitting cross-legged based on (i) generating pliancy, (ii) freedom from physical fatigue, (iii) uncommonness, (iv) generating faith, (v) general consensus; iv. conclusion; (b) explaining the upright body and proper aspiration, which has three parts: i. general presentation of the sutra passage, ii. detailed explanation of the sutra text, which has two parts: (i) explaining the upright body, which has two parts: question and answer, (ii) explaining proper aspiration, which has two parts: question and answer, iii. explaining the two functions, which has two parts: the function of the upright body, the function of proper aspiration; (c) explaining dwelling with mindfulness turned away, which has two parts: i. presenting the sutra passage, ii. explaining the sutra text, which has two parts: question and answer, which has two parts: (i) explaining mindfulness turned away based on abandoning the dark side, which has two parts: presentation and explanation, (ii) explaining mindfulness turned away based on eliminating the focal objects of the non-concentrated stage, which has two parts: presentation and explanation; (3) general conclusion. [3] The third, explaining the perfection of seclusion, has four parts: (1) question, (2) brief answer, (3) enumeration of terms, (4) detailed explanation, which has two parts: a. explaining physical seclusion, which has three parts: presentation, explanation, conclusion; b. explaining mental seclusion, which has three parts: presentation, explanation, conclusion; 4. general conclusion.
