初文分五。一明七種作意體相。二明七作意受何喜樂等相。三明七作意業用。四明六作意分四之相。五例明餘七種作意遍至非想非非想處相。

The first text has five parts: 1. clarifying the essential characteristics of the seven kinds of mental application; 2. clarifying what joy, bliss, and so forth the seven mental applications experience; 3. clarifying the functions of the seven mental applications; 4. clarifying the characteristics of dividing the six mental applications into four; 5. clarifying by analogy the characteristics of the remaining seven kinds of mental application pervading up to the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception.
