Third, explaining skillfulness in the sense bases has two [parts]: 1. Explaining the characteristics of the sense bases; 2. Explaining the meaning of skillfulness in the sense bases. The former text has four [sections]: 1. General question, with two [subparts]: (1) Questioning the characteristics of the sense bases; (2) Questioning the meaning of skillfulness in the sense bases; 2. Brief answer; 3. Listing the items, with twelve as in the treatise; 4. Summary. The second, explaining the meaning of skillfulness in the sense bases, has three [sections]: 1. General formulation; 2. Detailed explanation, with four [subparts]: (1) Explaining the three conditions of visual consciousness; (2) Explaining the three conditions of auditory consciousness; (3) Drawing an analogy with the three conditions of the remaining four consciousnesses; (4) Explaining the general summary, with two [divisions]: a. Formulation; b. Explanation; 3. Explaining the meaning of skillfulness.
