Regarding the passage "the aggregation of the remaining eight consciousnesses, throughout the three realms and nine stages, up to, therefore are all able to serve as immediately preceding conditions": the eighth consciousness across the three realms and nine stages can mutually serve as an immediately preceding condition, because death and rebirth between lower and higher stages open the way and guide one another. An unoutflowing consciousness arises immediately after an outflowing one; an outflowing consciousness definitely cannot arise from an unoutflowing one, because once the mirror-like wisdom arises, it is never interrupted. Looking across to the indeterminate, it is also like this. The seventh consciousness across the three realms and nine stages can also mutually serve as an immediately preceding condition, bound to the place of birth of the eighth consciousness; outflowing and unoutflowing can mutually produce each other, because they can induce each other within the ten stages (daśabhūmi); wholesome looking across to indeterminate is also like this. The sixth mental consciousness across the three realms and nine stages, whether outflowing or unoutflowing, wholesome or unwholesome, can each mutually serve as an immediately preceding condition, because in the state of moistening rebirth, etc., they induce one another. Among the five consciousnesses, the visual, auditory, and tactile consciousnesses belong to the kāma- and rūpa-dhātu, while the olfactory and gustatory consciousnesses belong solely to the kāma-dhātu; within their own categories they mutually serve as immediately preceding conditions. Looking across the three moral natures should also be understood in this way. The outflowing can yield place to the unoutflowing; the unoutflowing does not guide the outflowing, because once the all-accomplishing wisdom arises, it is definitely never interrupted.
