Regarding "relying on the power of oneself and the Dharma": "oneself" refers to one's own person; "the Dharma" refers to the teaching. According to the Samyuktābhidharma-hṛdaya-śāstra, three dominances are shown by which shame and remorse arise: first, self-dominance, which refers to superior persons who protect themselves and do not commit evil deeds; second, Dharma-dominance, which refers to middling persons who, in order to protect the noble teaching, do not commit evil deeds; third, worldly dominance, which refers to inferior persons who protect their worldly reputation and profit and do not commit evil deeds. Here, shame arises relying on oneself and the Dharma, and remorse arises relying on the power of the world.
