Regarding "having serving as the basis for all view-pursuits as its function": "all views" refers to the sixty-two views. In reference to the past, there are twenty propositions; grasping the past, they say: first, "one has gone as such"; second, "one has not gone as such"; third, "one both has gone as such and has not gone as such"; fourth, "one neither has gone as such nor has not gone as such." For the future, there are twenty propositions: first, "the future is finite"; second, "it is infinite"; third, "it is both finite and infinite"; fourth, "it is neither finite nor infinite." The twenty propositions for the present are: first, "the present is permanent"; second, "it is impermanent"; third, "it is both permanent and impermanent"; fourth, "it is neither permanent nor impermanent." The two views of annihilation and permanence serve as the root. Each of the three times has twenty; combined with the root, they make sixty-two views. "Pursuit" refers to intentional inclination. Since the sixty-two views all have intentional inclinations, they are collectively called view-pursuits. All take the view of individuality (satkāyadr̥ṣṭi) as their basis; therefore, it is called having serving as the basis for view-pursuits as its function.
