Regarding "arising based on the three grades of self and virtue": based on the three grades, four classes of conceit arise. Based on the inferior and middling grades, one kind arises: namely, conceit; because toward the inferior one reckons oneself superior, and toward the equal one reckons oneself equal, the mind is elevated. Based on the middling and superior grades, one kind arises: namely, excessive conceit; because toward the equal one reckons oneself superior, and toward the superior one reckons oneself equal, the mind is elevated. Based on the superior grade, two arise: namely, conceit beyond conceit and inferior conceit; because toward one superior to oneself one reckons oneself superior, and toward one greatly superior to oneself one reckons oneself slightly inferior, the mind is elevated. Based on the self, one arises: namely, I-conceit; because one falsely grasps the conditioned factors as self, the mind is elevated. Based on virtue, two arise: namely, wrong conceit and arrogant conceit; because with no actual virtue one reckons oneself to have virtue, using false reflection to elevate the mind; or toward superior dharmas that are realized, not having attained them one claims to have attained them, elevating the mind. This reveals the bases from which the seven conceits arise. If one speaks of the bases from which the nine conceits arise: according to the Abhidharmakośa and the Jñānaprasthāna, they are differentiated from three of the former seven conceits—namely, from conceit, excessive conceit, and inferior conceit. Saying "I am superior" is excessive conceit; saying "I am equal" is conceit; saying "I am inferior" is inferior conceit; saying "there are those superior to me" is inferior conceit; saying "there are those equal to me" is conceit; saying "there are those inferior to me" is excessive conceit; saying "there are none superior to me" is conceit; saying "there are none equal to me" is excessive conceit; saying "there are none inferior to me" is inferior conceit.
