"They can both be associated with both kinds of wholesome [states], etc.": first, innately acquired wholesome states, meaning those of a wholesome nature obtained at birth; second, wholesome states acquired through application, meaning those produced through the expedient means of hearing, reflecting, and cultivating. As for innately acquired wholesome states having remorse, it is because one gives rise to regret over evil already committed, or regrets not having done good when one did not do good. Because there is sleep at the time of a wholesome mind, one may also have investigation and analysis regarding various wholesome matters. If it is the wholesome states of application, in the stages of hearing and the like, sleep, investigation, and analysis can all be present.
