1.82

異時而熟變異而熟者。謂諸種子有二因義。一牽引因。謂未潤時以能牽引自遠果故。二生起因。謂被潤時以能生起近自果故。依牽引因立異時熟。未被潤時與所生果時不同故。依生起因立變異熟。既被潤以由因變異果方熟故。

Regarding "maturing at a different time, and maturing through change": Seeds have two senses of being a cause. First is the drawing-forth cause (ākṣepaka-hetu), meaning that prior to being moistened, they are able to draw forth their own distant effects. Second is the producing cause (janaka-hetu), meaning that when moistened, they are able to produce their own proximate effects. "Maturing at a different time" is established based on the drawing-forth cause, because before being moistened, the time differs from that of the effect produced. "Maturing through change" is established based on the producing cause, because once moistened, the effect only matures due to the transformation and change of the cause.
