Regarding "maturing as a different class": The maturation of an effect of a different nature results from a cause of a different nature. Seeds are furthermore of two kinds: First is vipāka [seeds], which are the two kinds of wholesome and unwholesome [seeds] that have been perfumed. Relative to the indeterminate seeds of the eighth [consciousness], these serve as the causal nature; for without these seeds, the seeds of the eighth [consciousness] would definitely not arise. Second is conventional designation (nāmasaṃketa) [seeds], which pervade all seeds of the three moral natures; each can directly generate its own produced effect, and relative to its own effect, each serves as the nature of the causal condition (hetu-pratyaya). Wholesome and unwholesome seeds cause the conventional designation seeds of the eighth consciousness to mature and produce the effects of the five destinies (gati); therefore, wholesome and unwholesome seeds are called vipāka-hetu. For this reason, it is said that the maturation of an effect of a different nature from a cause of a different nature is called vipāka.
