The treatise says: "Third is the discriminating […] because of definitively abandoning it." Dankuang explains: This is the consciousness of cognition among the five kinds of consciousness (manas). Deliberating over defilement and purity is called "discriminating cognition." Dirtying the pure mind is called "defilement." From the second bhūmi to the sixth bhūmi, when entering contemplation to focus on principle and abandon discrimination, they are able to eliminate it part by part, and hence it is said they "gradually abandon it." If they reach the seventh bhūmi, because they enter contemplation for long periods, this attachment to phenomena never manifests in activity, which is called "definitively abandoning it." The "stage of endowed precepts" is the second bhūmi, because this bhūmi is endowed with the three clusters of precepts. The "expedient of signlessness" is the seventh bhūmi, because they constantly apply attention to abide in the contemplation of signlessness.
