[Treatise:] Nor can one follow the mind ... using the mind to eliminate the mind. [Exposition:] Next is the third [part], eliminating the mind of lost mindfulness. Here there are two parts: first, citing non-conceptualization to restrain; later, showing the expedient of elimination. This is the first. "One must not follow the mind in externally minding objects": this directs one not to give rise to external marks of lost mindfulness. That is, one who cultivates calm must constantly apply attention; how could one merely depart from inverted objects? The inverted mind also does not abide in the mind losing mindfulness toward external objects. "Later using the mind to eliminate the mind": this directs one not to give rise to internal marks of lost mindfulness. When the preceding mind loses mindfulness and clings to objects, one relinquishes the objects; when the subsequent mind loses mindfulness and clings to the internal mind, one uses the mind of calm to eliminate that mind.
