論。如是當念至甚為可愍　述曰。此大悲觀除前第四不起悲失。如是當念眾生等者。先觀苦境為悲因也。眾生如是甚可愍者。見苦因相而生悲也。

[Treatise:] "In this way one should be mindful […] are greatly to be pitied." / [Exposition:] This is the contemplation of great compassion, which eliminates the former fourth error of failing to generate compassion. In "In this way one should be mindful [of sentient beings]," etc., one first contemplates the condition of suffering as the cause for compassion. In "Sentient beings being like this are greatly to be pitied," one sees the condition and characteristic of suffering and thus generates compassion.
