[Treatise:] "If one cultivates calm […] do not cultivate the roots of goodness." / [Exposition:] This shows calm and contemplation proceeding together as antidotes. That is, one who cultivates calm eliminates two kinds of faults: directly eliminating the two graspings of ordinary persons—grasping at person and grasping at phenomena—since these are the causes for abiding attachment to the worldly; and concurrently eliminating the two vehicles' view of a self of phenomena, since that is the cause for fearing saṃsāra due to phenomena. If one cultivates calm, one's mind rests in the true realm; how could one take joy in the world, and why should one dread saṃsāra? One who cultivates contemplation also eliminates two faults: directly eliminating the fault of the two vehicles' narrow and inferior mind that does not contemplate sentient beings and does not give rise to great compassion; and concurrently eliminating the fault of ordinary persons who do not contemplate impermanence, give rise to indolence, and do not cultivate the path.
