論。以是義故至不相捨離　述曰。次下第二總結雙運。於中有二。初顯具德。後明闕失。此初也。謂凡夫人不因修止得不樂世間難起精進。若二乘人不因修止得不怖生死。無以起悲。此則以止而助觀也。若二乘人不觀心行念念生滅。凡夫之人不觀三世無我不淨。無以厭離而住於止。此即以觀而助於止。故言止觀共相助成。

[Treatise:] "For this reason […] not abandoning one another." / [Exposition:] Next, the second part concludes the joint practice. There are two parts here: first, showing the possession of virtues; later, explaining the shortcomings. This is the first. If ordinary persons do not attain disaffection toward the world through cultivating calm, it is difficult to give rise to vigor. If people of the two vehicles do not attain freedom from fear of saṃsāra through cultivating calm, they have no means to generate compassion. This, then, is using calm to assist contemplation. If people of the two vehicles do not contemplate mental activities as arising and ceasing moment by moment, and ordinary persons do not contemplate the three times as lacking self and being impure, they have no means to develop revulsion and abide in calm. This, then, is using contemplation to assist calm. Therefore, it is said that calm and contemplation mutually assist and complete one another.
