[Treatise:] Furthermore, revealing... gate of tathatā. [Commentary:] The separate explanations of the meanings of the two gates above are now finished. From here downward is the second part, explaining the two gates together. Herein there are three parts: first, the indication; next, the explanation; finally, the conclusion. This is the first. As stated earlier, non-arising and non-ceasing unites with arising and ceasing, being neither one nor different. The previous explanation of the dharma and its meanings separately explained the gate of tathatā and the gate of arising and ceasing, demonstrating the meaning of not being one. Now, in this section, the two gates are juxtaposed, integrating characteristics into emptiness to demonstrate the meaning of not being different. Therefore, it says "revealing from arising and ceasing..." and subsequent phrases. Are the two gates originally without duality, or are their substances distinct so that they are made to integrate into the true? Answer: If originally they were not two, there would be nothing to integrate; if they were completely different, they could not be integrated either. Only because they are neither one nor different can one speak of integration.
