4.86

論。修諸波羅蜜攝化眾生　釋曰。此因悲以立行也。有義。二句皆顯利他。修六度等為攝生故。故說以施攝貧窮等。有義。不然違新論。故說修諸度四攝行故。初修六度即自利行。後四攝明利他行。有義。不然違論意故。此說因悲而起諸行。皆有自利利他義故。

[Treatise:] cultivate the pāramitās, and gather and transform sentient beings, [Commentary:] This is establishing practice on the basis of compassion. One opinion holds: both clauses reveal benefiting others, because cultivating the six pāramitās and so forth is for the sake of gathering sentient beings; hence it speaks of gathering the impoverished through giving, and so forth. Another opinion holds: this is not so, as it contradicts the new translation, which speaks of cultivating all pāramitās and the practices of the four means of gathering; the initial cultivation of the six pāramitās is the practice of self-benefit, while the subsequent four means of gathering clarify the practice of benefiting others. Another opinion holds: this is not so, because it contradicts the treatise's intention; this speaks of all practices initiated on the basis of compassion, and all have the meaning of both self-benefit and benefiting others.
