[Treatise:] For this reason, [the two gates of calming and contemplation assist each other and are not separated from one another.]
[Commentary:] Next, the second [part] gives a general concluding summary of the twin operation. In this there are two: first, showing the complete state; second, explaining the deficiency. This is the first. For this reason of according with principle and serving as antidotes, calming and contemplation mutually assist each other. Ordinary people, through calming, remedy attachment and give rise to vigor; the two vehicles, through calming, [dispel] cowardice and generate great compassion. This is using calming to assist in completing contemplation. If the two vehicles do not contemplate the arising and ceasing of mental activities, and ordinary people do not contemplate selflessness and impurity, they will have no means to become disgusted and detached so as to abide in calming. This is using contemplation to assist calming. Hence it is said that calming and contemplation mutually assist and complete each other.
