Treatise: What are the three? [...] because of sentient beings' suffering.
Commentary: This explains the marks according to the stated [number]. Speaking of the "straight mind": It has no other meaning; it is the correct contemplation of tathatā without erroneous thoughts. That is, it is the root of the practice of benefiting both self and others. Speaking of the "deep mind": It has the meaning of aspiration; because one aspires to cultivate all wholesome practices, it is the root of the practice of benefiting oneself. Speaking of "great compassion": It is universally rescuing and pulling [sentient beings] out of their suffering; it is the root of the practice of benefiting others. These three are the causal practices of the three pure moral codes, the three bodhi-minds, the three kinds of dedication, the three virtues, and the three bodies. These are the characteristics of resolving the mind.
