[Treatise:] Eighth, [their minds are gentle and pliant, abandoning arrogance and conceit, and are not] troubled by others.
[Commentary:] "Gentle" (róu) means pliable and gentle; "pliant" (hé) means harmonious and compliant—taking humility as its meaning. "Arrogance" (jiāo) means overbearing pride; "conceit" (màn) means haughtiness—taking lording over beings as its meaning. Those who are arrogant and conceited rely on their own achievements and disdain others; others will inevitably slight them, and failing to endure this patiently, they then harbor resentment. Those whose minds are gentle and pliant are humble toward others; others will certainly esteem and respect them—how could they slight [them]? Even if others commit insults out of arrogance, they also harbor no resentment. Thus the new treatise says: "Those who are gentle, pliant, and patient are respected by all the world."
