[Treatise:] Ninth, [even if they have not yet attained concentration, in all times and places their afflictions are attenuated and] they take no delight in the world.
[Commentary:] "Even if they have not yet attained concentration" does not mean they have never attained it. It means to say that although they have not constantly attained the mind of concentration, there are also times when they emerge from concentration and give rise to the mind of aspiration. Through the power of previous concentration, the seeds of affliction are weakened, and in various times and places active afflictions do not arise; therefore it is called "attenuating afflictions". Thus that [new] text says that because the seeds of affliction are thin, they never actively arise; because the bondages of defilements do not actively manifest, they take no delight in the world.
