Treatise: ...and so forth, up to stating in summary: because all sentient beings have deluded minds and discriminate thought after thought, none [of these] are associated [with it], and therefore it is spoken of as empty. (Commentary: Below this is the general summary. Within this there are two parts: first, summarizing along with the preceding meaning; next, summarizing in reverse to resolve doubts. This is the first. Deluded defilements are as numerous as sands of dust and difficult to enumerate exhaustively; now it speaks in brief summary: because no deluded mind defiles or touches it, it is spoken of as empty. Reply: "Deluded defilements as sands of dust" means that delusory marks are like grains of dust and sand, a multitude that cannot be exhaustively enumerated. Now it speaks in brief summary: because no deluded mind defiles or touches it, it is spoken of as empty. "Empty" receives its name by expressing [freedom from] delusion.)
