The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra states: "Now, one who seeks the Dharma does not seek while attached to the Buddha, does not seek while attached to the Dharma, and does not seek while attached to the Saṅgha. The Dharma is called undefiled; if one is defiled by phenomena up to and including nirvāṇa, this is defiled attachment, not seeking the Dharma. The Dharma is called unconditioned (asaṃskṛta); if one engages in the conditioned, this is seeking the conditioned, not seeking the Dharma. The Dharma transcends seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing; if one engages in seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, this is seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, not seeking the Dharma. Indeed, Śāriputra, one who seeks the Dharma should seek nothing among all dharmas."
