The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "There are two kinds of precepts: first, being able to uphold them by one's own nature; second, needing instruction from another. If one encounters an assembly of monks who perform the formal motion and three announcements (jñapti-caturtha-karman), only then does one receive the precepts. Although one has received the precepts, one must rely on upādhyāyas, masters, fellow students, and good friends (kalyāṇamitra) to instruct and guide one, so that one knows how to advance and stop, listen to the Dharma, preach the Dharma, and be fully equipped with all deportments. This is called needing instruction from another."
