The Buddhāvataṃsaka-sūtra, in the Chapter on Brahma-practice, says: "If the precepts are brahma-practice, is the ritual platform the precepts? Question: Is purity the precepts? Is teaching deportment the precepts? Is the threefold recitation of the karman the precepts? Is the upādhyāya the precepts? Is the ācārya the precepts? Is shaving the hair the precepts? Is wearing the kāṣāya robe the precepts? Is begging for food the precepts? Is right livelihood the precepts? Having contemplated thus, one takes nothing regarding the body, attaches to nothing regarding cultivation, and abides in nothing regarding dharmas. The past has already ceased; the future has not yet arrived; the present is empty and tranquil. There is no maker of karma, nor any receiver of retribution. This world does not shift; that world does not change. In this, what dharma is named brahma-practice? From where does it come? Whose possession is its substance? Whose is it, and by whom is it made? Does it exist or does it not exist?"
