修奢摩他等者。奢摩他者此云止品。為欲令心息分別故。止諸境相所有相應心心所等總名為止。毘鉢舍那此云觀品。為欲令心明利現前不沈沒故。觀察境相所有心等總名為觀。既非一法故皆言品。即是趣入心一境性。等持真空之方便也。

Regarding 'Cultivating śamatha,' etc.: Śamatha is translated here as the category of calming; because one desires to cause the mind to bring conceptual discrimination to rest, bringing to rest all marks of objects, all associated minds and mental factors are collectively called 'calming'. Vipaśyanā is translated here as the category of contemplation; because one desires to cause the mind to be clear, sharp, and manifestly present without sinking, observing the marks of objects, all such minds are collectively called 'contemplation'. Since it is not a single dharma, they are both termed 'categories'. These are the expedients for entering the one-pointedness of mind and holding the true emptiness in equipoise.
