法門一軌適絕等者。軌則也。適往也。躊躇疑路也。轍迹也。岐路也。履步也。此總意云。若法門唯遵一。則而往者無疑異道。今既教迹殊途。進步者焉能無惑。

Regarding 'The single track of the Dharma-gate has come to an end,' etc.: 'Track' (gui) means standard. 'Gone' (shi) means to proceed. 'Hesitating' (chouchu) means being in doubt about the road. 'Rut' (che) means trace. 'Fork' (qi) means branch in the road. 'Treading' (lü) means stepping. The overall meaning here is: if the Dharma-gate followed only one [standard], then those who proceeded would have no doubt about diverging paths. Now, since the traces of the teachings take distinct routes, how could those taking steps forward be free from confusion?
