鉾楯斯存物疑那遣者。上莫侯反。矟之類也。說文云。鉾長二丈建於兵車也。下食允反。欄㩜之類。從日㩜橫日楯。此亦兵車欄障之類也。古人有賣二物於市。極誇語於人言。鉾利而楯堅。或有質曰。以子之鉾擊子之楯如何。其人自知語違。遂默而無對。今此乖違亦存鉾楯之義也。未詳所出。知者敘之。

Regarding 'Contradictions remain, so how can doubts of beings be dispelled?': The upper character [mao, spear] is pronounced with the fanqie mo-hou; it is of the class of lances. The Shuowen says: 'A spear is two zhang long and mounted on a war chariot.' The lower character [dun, shield] is pronounced with the fanqie shi-yun; it is of the class of railings or barriers; [the form] with rì (sun) and lǎn means a horizontal barrier. This is also of the class of barricades on a war chariot. In ancient times, a person was selling two items in the market and boasted extravagantly to others, saying, 'My spear is sharp, and my shield is solid.' Someone questioned him, saying, 'What if one uses your spear to strike your shield?' The man knew his own words were contradictory, and thereupon was silent without an answer. Now, these discrepancies also retain the meaning of spear and shield (contradiction). I do not know where this [quotation] originates; let those who know describe it.
