Regarding “able to destroy the five hindrances”: first, the hindrance of sensual desire; second, the hindrance of ill will; third, the hindrance of sloth and torpor; fourth, the hindrance of restlessness and regret; fifth, the hindrance of doubt. They cover and conceal the mind so that it cannot become clear, and they obstruct all wholesome qualities so that they do not operate; therefore, these five kinds are designated as “hindrances.” By upholding the mind through vows, these five kinds are eliminated; thus it is called “destroying the five hindrances.” The prevention of heedlessness and so forth should be explained accordingly.
