Question: 'Regarding the aforementioned ritual of reciting the Buddha's name, the sage has clear texts, so it is credible. But what scriptural testimony is there for ordinary beings of the Semblance and Final Dharma ages in this world beholding the Buddha?' Answer: 'Below, I shall broadly cite the noble teachings to illuminate this purport, so that subtle doubts will surely be eradicated. The Contemplation Sūtra states: "The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī: 'Listen attentively, listen attentively, and reflect well upon it! The Tathāgata shall now, for Vaidehī and all sentient beings of future eras who are tormented by the bandits of defilements, explain pure karma. Excellent, Vaidehī! How well you ask about this matter! Ānanda, you should uphold this and broadly proclaim it to the multitude.' The Buddha said: 'The Tathāgata now teaches Vaidehī and all sentient beings of future eras to contemplate the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. By the Buddha's power, they will be able to see that pure land, just like holding a bright mirror and seeing one's own face.'" And further, the Buddha told Vaidehī: 'You are an ordinary being, weak and inferior in mental conception, who has not yet attained the divine eye and cannot behold the Buddhas and Tathāgatas from afar; there are extraordinary skillful means to enable you to see.' It also says: 'Those who recollect and contemplate will surely attain accomplishment.' Furthermore, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Through the samādhi of reciting the Buddha's name, one will surely see the Buddha; after life ends, one will be born before the Buddha.' Furthermore, the Bhadrapāla Sūtra says: 'At that time, Bhadrapāla said to the Buddha: "I now wish to inquire about a doubt in my mind; I wonder if you will permit it?" The Buddha said: "Ask as you wish."'
