At that time, Bhadrapāla said to the Buddha: 'How can one, dwelling in this Buddha-realm, completely behold the Buddhas of the ten directions and hear the true Dharma, not only without having yet attained the six spiritual powers or even the five spiritual powers, and without having cast off the body of this world or having been born in those Buddha-lands—merely dwelling in this land, see the Buddhas of other worlds, hear all their proclamations of the true Dharma, accept and uphold everything, practice according to the teachings, and attain great merit?' At that time, the World-Honoured One said to Bhadrapāla: 'Now there is a bodhisattva's samādhi of contemplating the presence of the Buddhas. If one cultivates such a samādhi, one will attain the accomplishment of all merits.' Bhadrapāla said to the Buddha: 'World-Honoured One, I only pray that you will explain this bodhisattva's samādhi of the direct presence [of the Buddhas], so that devas and humans of this world may attain benefit, peace, and joy.' The Buddha said: 'Bhadrapāla, for one who accomplishes this samādhi, all Buddhas will appear directly before them. Their mind does not abandon superior wisdom, they deliver sentient beings, attend upon and make offerings to all spiritual friends, and give rise to the perception of them as Buddhas.' Bhadrapāla said: 'What is the samādhi of contemplating the presence of the Buddhas?' The Buddha said: 'If there is a monk, a nun, a layman, or a laywoman who purely observes the precepts and, dwelling alone in a quiet and secluded place, contemplates: "Amitābha Tathāgata is now in the west, past hundreds of thousands of koṭis of Buddha-lands away, where there is a world named Land of Bliss, and is now presently teaching the Dharma." That person contemplates clearly and distinctly, and sees Amitābha Buddha. It is like seeing various things in a dream: when that person awakes, they remember what was seen in the dream and broadly explain it to others. Bhadrapāla, if a good man or good woman sits upright with a focused mind, conceives the physical marks, auspicious signs, and majestic deportment of that Amitābha Tathāgata, and how he preaches the Dharma to the great assembly, with single-minded undistractedness—whether for one day and one night, or for seven days and seven nights—fulfilling it completely just as previously heard, that person will surely see Amitābha Tathāgata. Bhadrapāla, it is like a person traveling far away who dreams of seeing their home: they do not know whether it is day or night, inside or outside. At that time, whatever eye faculties that person has are not obstructed by walls, fences, mountains, rocks, or even murky darkness.'
